how to play music while the tv is turned off

hello,
i'm trying to find an app, or some setup that will allow me to play music using another android or pc on the net, but without having to leave the tv on.
my minix is connected with hdmi to the tv which is connected to a receiver.
the data comes from an external HD which acts as a home server (connected to router).
right now, when i want to listen to music, i turn on the tv+minix+receiver and use xbmc as the player (since this is the only player i found that can connect to SMB servers)
